Recently there have been some disturbing developments at the Environmental Protection Agency regarding public health and in particular the health of American kids.  EPA authorities placed Dr. Ruth Etzel, a distinguished pediatrician and epidemiologist and Director of the Office of Children’s Health Protection, on “administrative leave” without explanation.  The OCHP plays an important role in protecting America’s children—born and unborn—from toxic environmental exposure.  This presentation in response to this and other developments at the EPA (e.g. roll back of mercury emission regulations for coal-fired power plants) will address the special vulnerability of children to the bioaccumulation of persistent toxins and the ensuing negative health effects. The presentation will also provide a brief summary of current environmental legislation (2016 Lautenberg Chemical Safety Act) and conclude with the argument from Catholic social teaching that children exposed to environmental toxins is a violation of their human right to bodily integrity and health.
